Join us this month for our Down to Earth workshops!

The Dutchess Land Conservancy (DLC) and Columbia Land Conservancy (CLC) invite you to join us for our upcoming Down to Earth Workshop Series.

This 3-part series will offer interactive learning opportunities for both farmers and landowners seeking to lease farmland or prepare their farm to transition to the next generation. Please join DLC and CLC staff either in person or through a live webcast.

All programs are free and open to the public. Please register for each workshop one week in advance.

Finding Your Way to Land Tenure
January 17, 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. (snow date January 23)
Churchtown Fire Department, 2219 County Rte 27, Taghkanic, NY 12521

This workshop will help beginning farmers identify the pros and cons of different farmland tenure arrangements including leases, farm purchases, and conservation easements. A panel of farmers and service providers will discuss their experiences and decision-making processes and offer advice on how to thoughtfully plan for long-term land security.

Understanding the NYS Agricultural Tax Assessment Program and Evaluating Farmland
January 19, 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. (snow date January 26)

This workshop will help farmers and landowners better understand the rules and details of the NYS Agricultural Tax Assessment Program and will include a question/answer session about the program. Additionally, farmer volunteers will describe basic concepts for evaluating the productivity of different properties and farm soils, and will help participants learn how to interpret soil maps. The group will discuss general concepts of farmland suitability and review infrastructure and security needs for various types of farm operations.

Farmland for the Future: Preparing for Farm Transfers

Finding farmland for sale is only one piece of a complicated puzzle. Successful farm transfers often take years of work between retiring farmers and the farmers who will continue to work their land. Come hear about what beginning farmers and landowners can do to prepare for a farm transfer.
