Winter is a great time to practice tree identification skills, and in March our Director of Education Julie Hart teamed once again with Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies Wildlife Biologist Fargione for a tree ID webinar. They were joined by our very own Outreach and Engagement Manager, Brian Straniti, who opened the session with some background on the social dynamics of forests. By looking at clues such as the color and texture of bark and different twig branching patterns, and using tools such as dichotomous keys and smartphone apps, we learned how to recognize many common local species of trees.
