Even a ground nest of yellowjackets couldn't keep this hardy group of volunteers down! They met on a Saturday morning in Pawling and set out on the Appalachian Trail as it winds its way through the Pawling Nature Reserve. The invasive plants were many, but they came prepared with loppers and pruners and carved a swath through the plants that were overgrowing the trail, making quick progress. Unfortunately, those pesky yellowjackets barred the way. Unable to venture further along the trail and not wanting to anger the already irritated insects, the volunteers trudged back to the parking area. But they weren't done - not by a long shot! Wanting to continue with the progress they had already made, the group chose to continue removing invasive plants along the boardwalk east of the Appalachian Trail Train Station where the trail makes its way across the Great Swamp. This group of volunteers - with their can-do attitude and spirit - exemplified what we have found so breathtaking about the people of Dutchess County and how much they care for and want to do more for our natural world.

An undaunted group of volunteers ran into a nest of yellowjackets but didn't let that deter them from removing invasives along the Appalachian Trail.
