Volunteers removed invasives and installed new bird boxes at the Lovett Preserve in Stanfordville.
In 2023, following the untimely passing of Gary M. Lovett, a forest ecologist and Senior Scientist Emeritus at the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies, the Town of Stanford chose to honor his legacy by renaming the former Stanford Wildlife Preserve. The DLC was privileged to have Gary included in a group of volunteers who came out to this preserve in November 2022 for a riparian planting of trees along the Wappinger Creek. So, we were overjoyed to continue to honor Gary's legacy by working with the Town of Stanford to host a volunteer event that was designed to improve the Preserve that now bears his name. A dozen volunteers came out on a June afternoon and worked into the evening removing invasives, carving out new trails, and installing new bird boxes, a fitting way to honor a good man who spent his life focused on our forests.
