Wednesday, November 13, 6:00 PM EST Online Event

Join Joan Maloof of the Old-Growth Forest Network to learn about the preservation of America's few remaining ancient forests.

Never-logged old-growth forests are both rare and extremely important ecologically. Joan Maloof will discuss her book, Nature’s Temples: A Natural History of Old-Growth Forests, which documents the ecological importance of these ancient forests. She will then explain the exciting work of the Old-Growth Forest Network, an organization she founded to help preserve the last of our ancient forests and ensure that anyone who wants to visit one can learn where they are located. In conclusion, she will examine the status of the Network in New York, and both federal and statewide policies that can affect forest preservation.

Joan Maloof is the author of numerous research articles and books, including Nature’s Temples; Treepedia; The Living Forest; Among the Ancients; Teaching the Trees; and most recently, Wild Old Woman. In addition to her research and writing, Maloof founded an organization with the goal of creating a network of protected forests across the US; that organization, the Old-Growth Forest Network, now has hundreds of volunteers and thousands of supporters. Maloof works to educate others regarding the extent and condition of our forests and to encourage their protection. Her formal education includes a bachelor’s degree in Plant Science, a master’s degree in Environmental Science, and a Doctorate in Ecology. She is a professor emeritus at Salisbury University where she taught Biological Sciences and Environmental Studies.

The DLC's Earth Matters webinar series is sponsored by LaBella Associates and Mutual of America.
