Another remarkable property stewarded by the DLC is Wethersfield Farm & Gardens in the Town of Stanford. An avid horseman, Chauncy Devereux Stillman first came to the area and became enchanted by the rolling hills and dramatic views of Dutchess County. In 1937, he bought two abandoned farms consisting of several hundred acres and named the property Wethersfield. As land became available, the estate expanded to its current size of 1,000 acres. Carefully constructed and refined over his lifetime, Stillman was also an avid conservationist. Today the formal gardens, miles of trails for both horseback riding and hiking, as well as the farm, main house, and carriage house are operated by the Wethersfield Foundation and open to the public.

The schedule is seasonal, so plan your visit or to learn more about the history of this remarkable estate.
